Hey Gang,

It's Labor Day Weekend and that means that there is lots of fun to be had in Mentone.  The headliner for the weekend is, of course, the Mentone Area Arts Council's Labor Day Art Show.
It will be held on the grounds of the Historic Mentone Inn on Saturday, September 4, from 10:00 until 5:00,  and Sunday, September 5, from 11:00 until 5:00.  The Show will feature over 30 of our local artists as well as artists from Birmingham, Huntsville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Atlanta. It is going to be a great show and it is never too soon to start picking up some of those holiday gifts.  Handmade items are always to best presents you can give.

And, if you are coming to the show, make plans to see Larry Joe Hall who will perform at the show from 3:00 until 5:00 on Saturday.  Larry Joe is an excellent entertainer and you will not want to miss his performance.

Have you visited the Mentone Area Arts Council's website lately?  You can do so by going to mentonearts.org.  MAAC member, Bob Hoffman, of the Art Gallery at Mentone, is now maintaining our site and we've been working hard to make some significant changes and updates to make the site more informative and useful to you.  The Membership page is now up-to-date and we're offering to put a link to your website there for FREE!  Can't beat FREE!  The NEWS and EVENTS pages are being updated weekly to keep up with all of our MAAC happenings.  If you haven't visited the website recently, give it a try.  And, if you don't have a website of your own, let me give a small plug for Bob Hoffman who has helped us out tremendously (and inexpensively).  If you would like to post your website, just drop me an email with the information and we will take care of it for you.

This weekend is also a good time to drop by the Studio 117 Gallery on the second floor of the Mentone Realty Building and take in Heather Nicely's exhibit, Inspirations from Nature.  Heather, a lifelong artist and long time resident of Mentone Alabama, draws her artistic inspirations from nature. A showcase of her art featuring a variety of mixed media including metal sculptures, pastel landscapes (pictured above) and monoprints is now on display. Her exhibit highlights the beauty Heather finds in her everyday life on Lookout Mountain. It is sponsored by the Mentone Area Arts Council and will run through the month of September. When she is not taking in the beauty around her, Heather creates some of her own, not only through her art but as a Landscape Designer.

You might want to mark you calendars now for a workshop sponsored the Mentone Area Arts Council featuring impressionist artist, Caroline Nuckolls.  Caroline currently resides in Atlanta but for the past seven years has taught the impressionistic style of painting based on Monet's style and colors at ART Giverny in France.  There, she worked with internationally renowned impressionist artist, Gale Bennett.  The workshop will be held at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church on September 24th and 25th.  The cost is $125. The workshop is limited to 10 participants and is filling up fast so make you plans to attend today.  Email Caroline for further information at caroline@bluestonebranch.com

There are some other great events coming up in September including a great event sponsored by the Trenton Arts Council on the 11th with artists from four states including an eclectic group of unconventional storytellers and poets from throughout the region.  We will have more information available on that as the date gets closer.

And, don't forget about Boom Days that celebrates the cultural heritage of Fort Payne, Alabama.  The event will be held in downtown Fort Payne on Saturday, September 18 and features a whole host of entertainers, arts, crafts and plenty of food and fun.

Also that day, the Fort Payne Humane Society is holding its PET PAWRADE at 10:00.  A tax-deductible donation of $10 per animal prior to September 11.  Emailhsard@wildblue.net for further information.

Down the road in October, there are two great events sponsored by the Mentone Area Arts Council.  Mark your calendars for a concert to be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010, at 7:30 PM in the Pavilion at the Mentone Inn for Lon Eldridge and the Delta Blues.  Lon is an extremely talented musician and you will not want to miss this event.

Also on October 23, 2010, the Arts Council is sponsoring Garden Greenstoppers featuring Benny Campbell at the City Auditorium in Fort Payne at 2:00.  Benny is a floral design extraordinaire and has led workshops and education events across the southeast for 35 years.  His expertise and wicked humor will dazzle the audience.  The cost is $20 per person and is an event that you will not want to miss.  Mark your calendars today.

We have several other events we will be announcing in the near future that are really going to be great!

Well, that's it for now. As I have said many times before, there is always a lot going on in Mentone and plenty to do and see.  And, there are a number of great events just down the road so stay tuned.

As always, please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in attending any of the above events.

See you out there!
